Okay, admit it. If you are reading this, you have lusted after, pined for, or otherwise fantasized about a car that is way, way out of your price range. It may have been a Ferrari or a Lamborghini or maybe something a little less well known but you have done it at some point. It's okay, you're not alone. We've all done it at one time or another. And then when someone else drives by in the object of your affection your head does that exorcist thing and spins like a top. Honestly, I've always viewed these status symbols as something of a road hazard. Seriously, everyone has to have a look. I've never heard of it, but I wonder if a Ferrari has ever caused an accident by simply distracting other drivers. It could happen!I am not here to dwell on the negatives of these vehicles though. I would rather focus on the reasons we find ourselves so attracted to them. I want to list two of the reasons why I believe they are so sought after. Really, it simply boils down to my opinion but that's the beauty when you write something: You can say whatever you want. So here are what I believe to be the two biggest reasons these automobiles have us drooling.
Rarity: This attribute will catch someone's eye no matter what their interest, be it birds, baseball cards or fossils. If you stumble across a rarity in whatever subject holds your attention, your head will snap around so you can really drink it in. Cars are something we all have a vested interest in at least to some extent. Anything out of the ordinary tends to attract attention. And since we all view ourselves as unique, I think we secretly wish to proclaim that to the world that uniqueness. Even more so, I think we like to be recognized for that uniqueness and a car of this sort tends to force the issue now doesn't it?
Status: If you see a Ferrari, you know the guy who owns it has money. Lots of it. If you can drive one of these fine vehicles, you clearly have arrived. So maybe some of us want one of these cars not so much because of the car itself, but because it represents a life of financial excess that so many of us dream about.
And as I said, this is not meant to be construed as a negative observation. There is nothing wrong with these desires in my mind. I see them as very human. I'm just glad there are some people who can afford them so I can catch a glimpse every once and awhile.
